Seize the moment...

I came from a very eclectic family. Before my step-sister died several years ago, I had an eighty-year-old step-sister and a two-year-old half-brother. My mother married a man the second time around who was twice her age. My father married a woman the ninth time around who was one third his age.

Anyway, my step-sister was in her fifties and I was about thirteen when she gave me the some very sage advice on more than one occasion. She said that the dishes would wait if her husband wanted her to go fishing with him. That didn’t make a lot of sense to me at thirteen but the words have come to life now that I’m past sixty.

Seize the moment!

Too many times I have put off what would bring me a great deal of joy because it wasn’t on my schedule or I couldn’t fit it into my all too important routine for the day or the week. The beds had to be made (never knew when a relative might stop by), the floors vacuumed (couldn’t have dust on the hardwood or a leaf on the carpet), and supper had to be on the table at the right time…complete with dessert (which I couldn’t eat because I was always on some kind of diet).

No more ever again!

I’m going to eat ice cream, maybe even a hot fudge sundae, once in a while, because I want it and I’m not even going to think about the fat grams or the calories. Remember all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert?

If Mr. B comes through the door and says, “Hey, let’s go eat fast food tacos tonight,” I’m will put the chicken I planned to fry back in the refrigerator. Hey, we might even drive through the park, take off our shoes and wade in the creek after we fill up on tacos. One thing for sure, we will go to Walmart while we are close by for a bottle of generic anti-acid pills but the tacos and the wading will be well worth it.

In the past I’ve said that Mr. B and I will go away for a week all alone when we get the yard landscaped and the house remodeled. Besides we can’t leave. Who would water the morning glories and take care of the tom cats?

Forget it. My daughter will take care of the cats. The morning glories can be in a live or die situation. They can live or they can die if it doesn’t rain.

Mr. B and I will pack a beach towel, a pair of sandals, a suitcase of comfortable clothes and set out for the beach and the sound of the ocean. We will call home once a week to tell the kids that we’re still alive and let them know that we are working on our second bottle of anti-acid pills which by then will be like candy to us.

I love real cheesecake but I’d just as well take a putty knife and apply it to my thighs as put it in my mouth. One slice equals six inches around my mid-section and two inches on my thighs. Two slices and I can’t wear a thing in my closet.

The other day I stopped at my favorite deli and bought two slices. I ate them slowly, savoring every fat gram. Then I knocked the guilt off my shoulder and drove home with a smile on my face. If my little red car had hit an ice berg I would have passed on into eternity a right happy woman instead of having regrets.

I may not be ready to trade my tired old flip flops in on roller blades but I am working on seizing the moment…and it’s a wonderful feeling. My step-sister was a prophet for sure!

What have you done this week that blew caution to the wind but you enjoyed it so much?

    1. You got it! I remember when we visited my MIL and found her using patched sheets. I told her that when she was gone I would use all those pretty sheets on my beds. Since she's not fond of me, I've never seen another patched sheet at her house!

  6. I'm not one for traveling. So when my hubby said we are going on vacation to Las Vegas. I'm like really, you can't fly. He said nope we're driving( all the way from Georgia). He use to be a trucker, so he can drive with little or no sleep. Well I had to have my house Spick and span before I left and lord who was going to feed my 7 horses 4 dogs and my cats. Nobody does it like me. I had to rely on my kids(21&27) and of course my BF Lisa. They would take care of the horses when not working and Lisa would do it the days they couldn't and let my dogs out to play and feed them. I have a hard time letting anyone take care of them. I also have a hard time leaving home.
Well our trip was good and everyone was still alive when I got back. Still can't believe we drove all the way there in 23 hours and 4 hours of sleep. I'm learning like you did to just go and enjoy yourself because you never know if that time will be missed and never get a chance again. Lisa dis real good putting up with my crazy mother-in- law too! She didn't have to whoop her arse one time! Long story

  8. First of all, I never pass up any excuse not to clean the house. Secondly, cheesecake is my favorite food in the world & I have it so rarely, so I could jump on that band wagon! (After my Weight Watchers meeting. lol) My biggest treat is to just sit down & read a book. I have one that I just don't want to put down.

  9. Oh boy did you write this for me to take notice I'm doing it again? As Carolyn knows I have multiple pets and do animal rescue and never go on vacation or spend one night out of the house for 10 years.
Then I was given an opportunity of a lifetime to be able to spend a week in July 2013 among my favorite authors one being Ms Carolyn Brown and I made no more excuses! I spent two weeks dropping animals on all my friends.
I lost a lot of time, just simple relaxing feel good time with family and friends.
Taking even a few moments for myself.
Sadly I fell back into my old habits, this is a kick in the pants....

  11. For some reason I always put off stuff regarding our house, bought used, and we saved money all year for trips. Lots of camping trips mainly, Yellowstone, Yosemite, all over Colorado. Little did I know that from my dx 3 years ago, my stage 1 breast cancer would become " as my oncologist says...the cancer from hell. " I went bone metatisis within a year, and now on my 3rd radiation and chemo in 3 years. Would not trade those memories with my husband and now 19 year old daughter Mattie for the world.

  12. In the last week, I've had several "all night" movie watching sessions with my daughter. She's 12 & I've always kept them on a very regimented sleep schedule. She asked last week what it would hurt to let her stay up, and I couldn't think of a reason. It's summer, she has no obligations. Last night, we were up until almost 2am watching An Affair to Remember. It was wonderful to share one of my favorite movies with her. The moment was made even more special when she said someday she'd watch the movie with her own daughter & talk about me. We slept in until 11 today & the world didn't end! Definitely encouragement to start seizing more moments.

  14. You have to realize you are only given one chance at this thing called LIFE. I remember when I said something to my daughter about this being the good china and the good linen and we only use it for holidays and when company came, and my daughter looked at me and said why are we not special enough? Well she was right! Use the good linen, use the good sheets, use the good dishes and glass ware and silver ware because you are SPECIAL and take the time to fish instead of iron, or go on a picnic instead of eat the meal you thought you were going to have. Have ice cream for dinner, because you are only promised this time right now, not a second more and for some tomorrow does not come. Don't regret what you could have done~
